A BODY SHAPE INDEX (ABSI)
A Body Shape Index (ABSI) tool assesses health risks such as premature death (dying earlier than the normal life expectancy), cardiovascular disease, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and kidney disease. A higher ABSI score increases these health risks, while a lower score decreases it and is healthier.
The ABSI Z score compares your ABSI score with the average for your age and gender to quantify risk for these health issues. A higher z score (more abdominal fat relative to body size) is associated with a higher risk early death and chronic diseases, while a lower z score (less abdominal fat relative to body size) is associated with a lower risk.
WHY ABSI IS SUPERIOR TO BMI
The Body Mass Index (BMI) gives you a guideline of what is a healthy weight relative to your height, but it can be misleading because it does not account for abdominal fat. For example, you could have a normal BMI making you think you are healthy, but have a high abdominal fat, which is not so healthy.
ABSI is better at evaluating your health risks because it accounts for your waist circumference (abdominal fat) in relation to your height and weight. Abdominal fat is more harmful than fat stored elsewhere. Waist circumference reflects the accumulation of harmful visceral fat which contributes to insulin resistance, inflammation, and is associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature death.
