About Muscle
The type of muscle we will be talking about is skeletal muscle. In this context, we will use the term muscle for short. Skeletal muscle is the type of muscle people are talking about when it comes to moving, getting stronger, and building muscle.
More muscle gives you better strength, function, tone, helps prevent injury, and a faster metabolism. A lack of muscle does the opposite. It can leave you weak, not able to do certain things, looking soft, more prone to injury, and a slower metabolism.
Muscle mass decreases with age from 30 and onward around a rate of 5% per decade for people who don’t use their muscles in ways to maintain it or increase it such has through strength training. This age related loss of muscle and from a lack of proper use is known as sarcopenia.
How To Determine Your Muscle Mass Percentage
Here are ways you can measure your muscle mass percentage. Muscle mass percentage is the proportion of muscle tissue (skeletal muscle) to total body weight.
1 Body Composition Scale: There are at home body composition scales you can buy and step on that will give you a general idea of your muscle mass percentage. Some are more accurate than others. While they may not be 100% accurate, they will give you a general idea. When choosing body composition scales, if you’re willing to pay more, and you want a more accurate reading, the scales that have both feet and hand sensors are generally more accurate than the scales that have only feet sensors.
2 Professional Body Fat Percentage Measurements: There are ways to professionally measure your muscle mass percentage that will give you a very accurate result. These methods require going to a professional facility. These methods could be hydrostatic weighing, DEXA, 3d body scan, MRI, BOD POD, and more. They will look at your muscle mass percentage and other body composition metrics. This will cost you a decent amount of money for this service.
